University of Liverpool, School of Arts

Remodelling and updating Grade II listed building

Project: School of Arts

Client: University of Liverpool

The University’s brief to Aspect was provide a fantastic space for discussion and events in this historic building which was the former home of the Bishop of Liverpool and double Victoria Cross winner Captain Noel Chavasse.

It was imperative for the University that the works were completed with great attention to detail. The project team commenced the refurbishment with a clear understanding of the detail and architectural features that would be incorporated in this scheme. Key to this was restoring and maintaining the existing external in situ sash windows as not to compromise the external appearance of the building.

Internally the building has been modernised from top to bottom; providing new offices for 45 academic staff, as well as four new postgraduate research rooms, an expanded student reception, disabled lift and a revamped School of the Arts library.

More than a kilometre of bookshelves required refurbishment or installation during the works, which also threw up some surprises. Two additional third floor rooms were discovered at the top of a staircase hidden behind a false wall, and some academic staff will now occupy these former servants’ quarters.
